This seminar is suited to those working in operating theatre and recovery. The focus is on the use of Optiflow to manage an airway during intubation in theatre. We discuss the challenges presented to the respiratory system during anaesthesia and the methods traditionally used to manage the airway during intubation. The concept of pre-oxygenation and apneic oxygenation are discussed in detail to ensure a thorough understanding. The application of Trans nasal Humidified Rapid-Insufflation Ventilatory Exchange (THRIVE) is introduced. The technique is discussed in detail, as are the physiological mechanisms in action with the therapy. The use of Optiflow in recovery is introduced to maintain those patients at risk of desaturation post-surgery. This discussion is supported by a review of the clinical literature currently available. The seminar includes hands on setup sessions in smaller groups.
